WAIMEA — The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) hosted its sixth meet of the track and field season on Saturday at Hawaii Preparatory Academy.
Ka Makani’s Elaina Head highlighted the girls field events with another dominant performance — placing first in the high jump (5-3), long jump (15-11.25), triple jump (34-4.50) and discus throw (86-4). The junior’s high jump and triple jump marks were good for top-1o in the state, and her high jump and discus performances were additionally personal records. Her first-place in discus comes after debuting in the event just three weeks ago.
Konawaena’s Violet Schaut highlighted the girls running events once again — winning in the 100-meter dash (12.67s) and 400-meter dash (59.31s). Both times were top 10 in Hawai‘i, with her 400-meter dash finish being a new personal record.
HPA’s Brooke Samura earned a personal-best time in the 300-meter hurdles, winning the event in 49.22s.
Kealakehe’s Elisa Childers notched a personal record and top-10 state time in the 1500-meter dash, racing in 5:16.07 and winning by over 20 seconds. Childers also claimed victory in the 3000-meter run for the third time this season — winning by nearly a minute and running in 11:28.95.
Hilo’s Kekaimalino Halpern won the 800-meter run for the second time in 2024 with a top-25 state time of 2:35.26.
Leading the boys field events was Konawaena star Elias Malapit, who took first in the shot put (42-8) and the discus throw (150-0). The junior’s discus outing was additionally a top-10 state mark.
Kekainalu Fuerte of KSH posted a top-10 state mark in the long jump — 41-11.50. It was the senior’s second win in the event this season.
Kea‘au’s Sean Randall also turned heads at the meet, winning the high jump (5-8) and long jump (20-7). The senior’s long jump mark was a career best. Randall also excelled in the running events — winning the 400-meter dash with a personal record of 53.74s.
Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i’s Kahiau Poe won his sixth 100-meter dash with another top-10 time in Hawai‘i — 11.01s. In the 200-meter dash, three Wildcats placed in the top three — Carmine Taetuna-Fautanu (22.72s), Malu Tan (23.31s) and Lucas Carvalho (23.56s).
Konawaena’s Laanui Meyers ran a personal-best time of 15.87s in the 110-meter hurdles, winning the event for the fifth time this season.
HPA’s Drake Fricke won his second consecutive 1500-meter run in 4:20.36, a new personal best. He won narrowly over Waiakea’s Shane Tominaga, who raced in 4:20.46.
With just one all-schools meet remaining, the season will resume 9 a.m. Saturday at Kea‘au High School, beginning with the field events.
